Yongxing Square Overview

A comprehensive guide to Yongxing Square, a cultural food street featuring traditional Shaanxi cuisine.

Yongxing Square (永兴坊) is a cultural food street showcasing traditional Shaanxi cuisine in a Ming Dynasty-style architectural setting. Located in the Xincheng District, the area recreates the atmosphere of an ancient Chang'an neighborhood with traditional buildings, stone streets, and cultural decorations. It is famous for its 'food to remember' (摔碗酒) tradition, folk performances, and diverse regional food stalls from across Shaanxi province.

Opened in 2017, Yongxing Square features over 100 food stalls and restaurants representing all 107 counties of Shaanxi province, each offering their local specialties. The square is designed as an immersive cultural experience where visitors can taste authentic regional foods, watch traditional crafts being made, and enjoy folk performances. The famous 'sweeping bowl wine' tradition involves drinking rice wine and then smashing the bowl for good luck.

Must-Eat Specialties & Experiences

Yongxingfang gathers intangible heritage snacks from all 107 districts and counties of Shaanxi. With such overwhelming variety, the best strategy is to try small portions of many dishes rather than filling up on one.

🍜 Food Highlights
  • Zichang Jianbing (子长煎饼): A northern Shaanxi specialty — paper-thin pancakes wrapped with shredded potato and dipped in chili oil. Light, fresh, and not greasy.
  • Biangbiang Noodles (biangbiang面): The signature pasta of Guanzhong — belt-wide hand-pulled noodles. Watch the live noodle-slapping performance! Order the "Three-in-One" to taste three flavors at once: chili oil, minced meat, and tomato-egg.
  • Jingyang Zenggao (泾阳甑糕): A traditional Guanzhong dessert steamed from glutinous rice, red dates, and beans — soft, sticky, and sweet. Best eaten piping hot.
  • Zhashui Yangyu Ciba (柞水洋芋糍粑): A southern Shaanxi specialty — potatoes freshly pounded into chewy dumplings, served in a tangy-spicy soup with crunchy peanuts. A truly unique texture.
  • Tongguan Roujiamo (潼关肉夹馍): The bun is fried to a flaky, shatter-on-bite crispness, stuffed with braised pork that's perfectly half-fat, half-lean and dripping with juice.
  • Ningqiang Walnut Bread (宁强核桃馍): Freshly baked, fragrant and sweet — a local specialty that also makes a great edible souvenir to take home.
🎭 Cultural Experiences
  • Sweeping Bowl Wine (摔碗酒): Yongxingfang is the birthplace of this viral tradition — pay CNY 5 for a bowl of rice wine, drink it in one gulp, then smash the bowl on the ground for "peace year after year" (岁岁平安). Incredibly satisfying and photogenic!
  • Intangible Heritage Performances: Multiple stages host live shows of Huayin Laoqiang (华阴老腔, ancient throat-singing-style folk music), Huaxian Shadow Puppetry (华县皮影戏), and Heyang Marionette Theater (合阳提线木偶). Check the schedule at the entrance and arrive a few minutes early for a good spot.
  • Wishing Wall (许愿墙): Buy a wooden wishing tag for a few yuan, write your wishes, and hang it on the wall — a popular photo spot.
